If you want a wonderful mix of spectacular coastal scenery, some of the best archaeological monuments in the UK, brilliant wildlife and a classic malt whisky (Highland Park) then I can't think of anywhere that beats Orkney. Small ferries link to the various islands that make up the archipelago - make sure you go to Eday, Hoy, Westray, Sanday, Rousay ... in fact go to them all, each one is different and they all have their own charm.
